What Your Resume Should Look Like

So, if you’ve followed my directions in this guide, your resume should look something roughly like this:

This would be the resume as one page:

And this would be the resume as a two-pager:

Page 2:

Don’t worry if your resume doesn’t look exactly like mine. No two resumes should look exactly the same. No two job seekers are exactly the same. But if you have the general format above, then you’re in good shape.

I’m always torn about the summary section: On one hand, it can be a sharp appetizer: orient the reader, give a place for key search terms for the robots, and highlight key points.

On the other hand, it can be vanilla pudding: Too often it doesn’t tell anyone anything and just wastes space, e.g. “I seek an opportunity where I can use my skills to the fullest”

In some ways, sample resumes foster this because they are (and must be!) generic examples.

I feel that everyone should take their summary section out to the woodshed and come back with one that is half as long and that could describe only you. That would be a good summary.
